Streptococci

The group Streptococci has over 50 species. Some of them are beneficial, some cause infections and some are used in fermentation processes.

S. oralis, S.rattus and Streptoccus salivarius are beneficial species of the oral cavity. One of the beneficial species is S. thermofilus which is used to manufacture yogurt and cheese.

S. mutans is a non beneficial plaque forming species of the mouth and S. pyogenes causes pharyngitis. In the pharyngial area S. pneumoniae is a common causing agent of pneumonia.

In the gut the prevalence of streptococci is usually small around 3-4%. The prevalence of streptococci has been shown to increase in IBS and during the use of PPI-medication (acid reflux treatment).
