Bacteroides

Bacteroides– group consists of dozens of species. They are a part of the normal gut flora but can disturb the balance of the gut when the prevalence is elevated. Typical groups are Bacteroides, Prevotella and Porphyromonas. A normal prevalence in adults is 10-15%.

The bacteria in this group utilize many food sources such as vegetables, fats, fish and meat. The gut of vegetarians has more Prevotella while meat-eaters have more Flavobacterium for example. Species of Porphyromonas-have been linked to inflammatory diseases in the mouth.
